In the squirrel’s room we offer a range of activities to suit all children’s interests and likes.
We do PE and movement on a regular basis and encourage the children to get themselves dressed and undressed with minimal help.
We do daily pencil control skills using different activities to promote and progress the children’s abilities. This also includes cutting skills and mouse control, using ICT to enhance this. Tablets are also used for the children to understand the way tablets, etc. can be used for learning tasks, rather than just games!
We have lots of fun doing circle time where we share ideas and gives the children opportunities to talk and discuss emotions. Art activities are encouraged which also allow the children to express themselves (this is also a great way to celebrate different religions which the children like to do).
We offer the children free choice as well as adult led, structured activities. These are available for the children each and every day and encourage them to make choices for themselves, as well as use their imagination.
Story time and singing is a big part of our day, inclusive of role play and drama.
We try to encourage the children to eat independently and try new foods. We offer them a good choice of foods which they serve themselves and pour their own drinks…always trying to develop their independent skills, ready for their next room (the Badgers) where they get ready for their next journey at school.
We have a newly designed free flow area with all weather coverings which means we can be out there no matter what the weather! It gives the children a chance to choose indoor activities but also freely move to activities outside to engage and stimulate them throughout the day.
The benefit of having our free flow area enables us to offer the children wet and dry sensory play where all children can engage in the feeling of different textures. They also have the choices of a range of scooters, bikes and cars for their gross motor skill development.
Ring games and parachute tasks add to their imaginative play which is more adult led but allows children to use and adapt these ideas for their free play.
We have a Nursery garden and the children enjoy caring for this. We grow our own fruit and vegetables which we then use for cooking!
Show and Tell is a daily subject which is structured to fit in with our topics, shapes and colours of the month – parents are given a weekly sheet to let them know what the children will be focusing on the following week so that they can get involved and know what their children are learning!
